Rikugien Gardens Cherry Blossom Nighttime Illuminations

※updated on July 23 2025

One of the seasonal highlights at Rikugien Garden is the "Spring Night Illumination", a special event where the garden opens at night—a time when it's normally closed to visitors. During this limited-time event, the garden’s iconic 15-meter-tall weeping cherry tree (shidare-zakura) becomes the centerpiece of a stunning light display, along with other scenic spots throughout the grounds. The sight of the massive cherry blossoms illuminated against the night sky is breathtaking and perfect for photography.

Rikugien is one of the finest examples of a traditional Edo-period strolling garden. It attracts visitors year-round who appreciate Japanese gardens and classical aesthetics. The garden was originally created by Yanagisawa Yoshiyasu, a trusted vassal of the Tokugawa shogunate, who personally designed it over a span of seven years.

During the illumination event, notable spots such as the central island (Naka-no-shima), the site of the Ginkatei teahouse, Suikōe, and the iconic Fukiagematsu pine tree are also beautifully lit. One unique feature is a projection mapping display on the walls of a historical storehouse, which brings classical waka poems to life in a modern artistic format.

Another must-see is the illuminated bamboo grove, whose cool green glow creates a mysterious, almost otherworldly atmosphere found only in Rikugien.

But the true highlight of the evening is undoubtedly the weeping cherry tree. Its grandeur, bathed in soft lights, creates a dreamlike space that captivates everyone. Nearly every visitor stops to take multiple photos, savoring this enchanting moment.
